Cimerron Depot Cimarron, Colorado Kit 1059-A Passenger Station Kit 1059-B Freight House ![]() ![]() The difficult terrain in the area around Cimarron had seemed to make it impossible to run a railroad through. However by the early 1880s, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad was steadily working west across Colorado.General William Jackson Palmer, who owned the railroad, accepted the challenge of building a railroadthrough the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. In August of 1882, the first D&RG train arrived in a small construction camp dubbed "Cimarron" because some of the workers thought it looked like Cimarron, New Mexico. Most thought that thetiny construction townwould disappear when construction was over.
