Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis, Maryland.

Kit 1009

Phtoto of Light House kit

Phtoto of Light Hosue

Three lighthouses have been built to mark the shoals extending out from the north side of South River, four miles south of Annapolis, MD. The original was built in 1824. It was poorly designed and was replaced in 1838. This new light remained until 1894. The present structure was built well out of the shoal and has stood since 1875. In the winder of 1877 the foundation of the new lighthouse and the lens was damaged by heavy ice flows and in 1899 a new model fourth-order lens was installed, as was an icebreaker. By 1964 Thomas Point was the only manned lighthouse on the bay. In 1972 during tropical storm Agnes, the light station was superficially damaged by 23-foot waves. It is the last screw pile lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay and remains the lighthouse most recognized. On January 23, 1975 the light was declared a historic landmark, which should assure its preservation.
