Bruce Sparrow
Bruce Sparrow at work on his home made laser system

Bruce Sparrow started the laser business in 1994 after seeing some laser cut parts in a model shop that opened up across the street from where he was working. The model shop was involved in building a large model railroad layout and needed various parts cut and was getting them from Gene Oriol at Northeastern Scale Models.

At the time there were very few companies that were supplying laser cut kits for model structures. He was about to retire and at age 66 and thought that it would be a good small business that he could run without any heavy lifting. After checking into the prices of lasers at the time (cheapest one was $45,000.00) Bruce decided to build his own system.

He bought a 25 watt surplus medical laser for $1500.00 which lasted about 1 year before it burned out and then went to a Miles Griot which he couldn't get recharged. He finally wound up with Synrad lasers that worked out real well. The parts for the table, motors and drivers were all bought separately and assembled as an X-Y system.

His first kit was the Sparrow point lighthouse followed by the Scott Wire and Cable Company. As time passed he came out with shingles and various other kits. His big break came when he got involved with Micro-Mark having a whole page in their catalog with pictures of the kits. They send out 1.5 million catalogs a year and he had a hard time keeping up with the orders. After the initial surge things finally slowed down a little but it was a good run for about 2 or 3 years.

Regards,

Bruce Sparrow
